It's been a year since Harambe was killed,Deborah Driggs Archives but the internet will never forget.
Last year at this time, a curious toddler wandered into the gorilla's cage at the Cincinnati Zoo, leading zoo officials to then shoot Harambe out of fear of what he might do.
Bored people on the internet -- remember, this is the pre-Trump era, when people used to be bored -- then took up the gorilla's cause. No one, it should be noted, wanted them to.
SEE ALSO: Please don't name April the giraffe's baby HarambeHarambe memes flooded the internet, some of them targeting the Cincinnati Zoo. Things reached such an emotional pitch that the Cincinnati Zoo Director, Thane Maynard, had to come out to say that he was "not amused" by all the Harambe memes.
At the time, someone had hacked into Maynard's Twitter account and begun sending messages with the #DicksOutForHarambe hashtag.
Today, people on the internet remembered Harambe -- without, for the most part, being an asshole about it.
Here are their best remembrances.
